De Javasche Bank was established in Batavia in 1828 as a colonial central bank, and its early note issues navigated a peculiar monetary environment — the Dutch East Indies circulated a chaotic mix of coins from multiple origins, making even small-denomination paper instruments practically useful. The "Recepis" designation distinguishes this as a receipt-type obligation rather than a conventional banknote, a form the bank used for lower denominations before fully standardized note production took hold.
Survivors from this 1846 issue are exceptionally rare. Nearly two centuries of tropical humidity, insect damage, and colonial administrative indifference to archival preservation have eliminated most examples from the record entirely.
