Morioka Domain (盛岡藩) was a Nanbu clan territory in Mutsu Province, one of the larger han in the Tōhoku region. Like many domains struggling with chronic fiscal shortfalls in the late Edo period, Morioka issued its own paper currency — hansatsu — as a mechanism for managing internal debt rather than facilitating trade in any conventional sense. The notes were valid only within domain borders, which made them essentially forced instruments: local merchants and peasants had little legal recourse but to accept them.
This 1835 issue falls within a period of documented financial stress for the Nanbu clan, years before the Tenpō famines would further destabilize northern domains.
