The kepings of the Malay Peninsula were never the product of a single centralized authority — they circulated through a patchwork of sultanates, trading posts, and colonial entrepôts where small copper coinage was chronically undersupplied. Many were struck privately or semi-officially, with attribution still contested among specialists. The SS 29 / KM#8.1 classification places this piece within the Straits Settlements issues, though the precise mint origin remains unresolved in the literature.
The 1832 date falls squarely within the period when Penang, Malacca, and Singapore were being consolidated under British administration following the 1826 formation of the Straits Settlements.
