Augustenborg's 1921 emergency issue belongs to the brief but intense wave of Danish-administered notgeld that followed the 1920 reunification of Northern Schleswig with Denmark after the post-WWI plebiscite. The municipality was scrambling to address a local coin shortage while the monetary transition from German to Danish currency was still being absorbed. H. O. Persiehl in Hamburg — still the natural commercial printing hub for this region despite the border having just moved — handled the job, a pragmatic choice that says something about how slowly trade relationships shift after political ones.
Designer Jens Raben is a rare named credit for a piece of municipal scrip at this level.
