1 Krone - Johann II Pattern

Johann II ruled Liechtenstein for 70 years — the longest reign of any European monarch in recorded history — yet the principality struck almost no coinage during his tenure. This 1898 krone pattern was part of an abortive effort to establish a Liechtenstein monetary identity separate from the Austro-Hungarian currency that actually circulated in the territory. It never progressed beyond the pattern stage, and the principality would not issue circulating coinage again in any meaningful quantity until the 20th century commemorative program.
