| Obverse description | Central field bearing the ornamental shield of arms of the Orange Free State, featuring an indented top and sides in an elaborate cartouche style. The legend ORANJE VRYJSTAAT arcs above the shield, while the patriotic motto GEDULD EN MOED appears on a banner below the arms. The date 1887 is inscribed in the lower exergue beneath the banner.
