Reverse description At center, a European pine marten (Martes martes) leaps to the left, serving as the etymological symbol of the kuna currency. The numeral 1, denoting the face value, is placed above the animal in the upper field. At the base of the coin, the historic Croatian chequerboard coat of arms (šahovnica) is depicted. The entire peripheral field is bordered by an elaborate interlaced braided ornament in the style of early medieval Croatian stone-carving, encircling the design along the full edge.
