Burma's post-independence banking infrastructure was still being assembled when this note was issued, and Thomas De La Rue in London continued to supply the new Union Bank's currency needs well into the 1950s — a common arrangement for newly independent states lacking domestic printing capacity. The 1953 series replaced transitional notes that had circulated since the British withdrawal in 1948.
Pick 42 is frequently found with handling folds but rarely with serious soiling, suggesting it saw moderate urban circulation before being displaced by later issues.
