Myanmar's 2005 gold bullion issues were produced under the State Peace and Development Council, the military junta that had ruled since the 1988 suppression of the pro-democracy uprising. Sanctions from Western governments during this period severely restricted the international market for these coins, limiting their distribution almost entirely to domestic buyers and Southeast Asian dealers.
The .9999 fineness matches the purity standard adopted by most modern sovereign bullion programs after the Royal Canadian Mint popularized it with the Maple Leaf in 1979.
