Muhammad Fareed Didi ruled as the last Sultan of the Maldives; he was deposed in 1953 when the islands briefly became a republic, then restored in 1954, and finally overthrown again in 1968 when the sultanate was abolished permanently. This coin was struck during his second reign, just eight years before that final transition. The Maldives contracted bronze coinage production to foreign mints through much of the twentieth century, local striking capacity being nonexistent on the atoll chain.
