The "Repubblica del Nord" was a regionalist political project promoted by the Lega Nord in the early 1990s, issuing these token-like pieces as propaganda during the party's push for northern Italian separatism. They circulated as novelties rather than legal tender, timed to coincide with Umberto Bossi's peak agitation for a federal or independent Padania.

The heavy variant was struck alongside a lighter version — the weight difference distinguishing official-issue pieces from subsequent runs, though neither carried any monetary authority.
