| Opmerkingen |
The Wareneinkaufsverein zu Gotha was a cooperative purchasing society — essentially a collective procurement body for member retailers in the Gotha region. Notes of this type were issued as private emergency currency (Notgeld) during the acute coin shortages of the First World War period, circulating within a closed commercial network rather than through any banking channel. Redemption depended entirely on the issuer remaining solvent, which not all such cooperatives did.
The Hofbuchdruckerei was the court printing house in Gotha, a commercially active firm with a long history of quality work — a sensible local choice, though it lent these scrip notes a slightly more official appearance than their legal standing warranted.
