Obverse description Cast bronze cash-type coin featuring a central square hole framed by a raised inner rim. Four Chinese characters in regular (li) script are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central aperture, reading clockwise from the top: 東國通寶 (Dongguk Tongbo), translating as 'Currency of the Eastern Sea [Country]'. The characters are rendered in moderate relief against a flat field, separated by the horizontal and vertical axes defined by the square perforation. The outer rim is plain and slightly raised, and the coin displays a patina of dark blue-green encrustation consistent with prolonged burial.
