Four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central hole, reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left: 常 (top), 通 (right), 寶 (bottom), 平 (left), forming the legend 常平通寶 (Sangpyeong Tongbo), the standard monetary inscription of the Joseon dynasty. The characters are bold and well-defined against the flat, unadorned field, with an outer raised rim encircling the entire obverse. |
