| 背面描述 | Denomination N$ 1 and date 1989 inscribed at center, flanked by two decorative branches — one of olive and one of laurel — tied at the base with a bow, a classical heraldic motif symbolizing peace and victory. The numerals and lettering occupy the central field, with the branches framing the design in a symmetrical arrangement. |

Uruguay's 1989 monetary reform replaced the old peso at a rate of 1,000 to 1, introducing the nuevo peso as the country struggled with inflation that had eroded purchasing power for decades. By the time this coin was struck, the nuevo peso itself was already losing ground — hyperinflationary pressure would eventually force another redenomination in 1993, when the peso uruguayo replaced it at the same 1,000-to-1 ratio.
