The United States of the Ionian Islands was a British protectorate established by the Congress of Vienna in 1815, administered under a Lord High Commissioner and possessing its own currency — the obol and lepton system introduced partly to replace the chaotic mix of Venetian, French, and Ottoman coinage still circulating across the islands. This 1819 piece is a pattern or trial strike, almost certainly produced in London before any formal coinage was committed to production, as was standard practice for British-administered territories seeking Treasury and Colonial Office approval.
