Frederik IX's smallest denomination survived into the 1960s largely through institutional inertia — Denmark had been debating the practical abolition of the øre's lowest values since the postwar period, and the 1 øre's purchasing power had long since collapsed to meaninglessness. Production continued at Copenhagen's Amager facility primarily to satisfy legal tender obligations and vending machine tolerances rather than any genuine commercial demand.
The series ended in 1964, two years before Denmark's currency commission formally recommended eliminating small-denomination bronze coinage from circulation planning.
