| Obverse description | Central field dominated by the Arabic legend سلطان محمود خان (Sultan Mahmud Khan) rendered in flowing naskh script, arranged in three lines across the flan. The inscription is enclosed within a beaded inner border, with the irregular hammered flan producing a characteristically uneven outline typical of provincial Ottoman copper coinage. The surfaces show a green patina consistent with aged copper. |

The Tripolitanian para issues of Mahmud II's reign were struck under the Karamanli dynasty, which had governed the Regency in near-total autonomy from Istanbul since Yusuf Karamanli seized power in 1795. Local copper coinage of this type circulated alongside a chronic shortage of silver, a problem Tripoli never fully resolved during the Karamanli period. Yusuf's government was simultaneously managing tribute payments to European powers, debts from the 1801–1805 war with the United States, and the logistical strain of the trans-Saharan trade routes on which the Regency's economy depended.
