Attributed to the reign of Olav Kyrre, this penning belongs to a coinage reform period following the turbulent rule of Harald Hardråde, who died at Stamford Bridge in 1066. Kyrre's long, unusually peaceful reign — rare for an 11th-century Norse king — allowed for greater monetary stability, and his silver issues circulated across a network of Norwegian trading towns including Bergen, which he is credited with formally establishing.
Skaare 24 is a thin, irregular flan type characteristic of Norwegian bracteate-influenced striking practice of the period.
