Struck under Harald Hardrada's successor Olav Kyrre, this penny belongs to the period when Norwegian coinage was still heavily shaped by Anglo-Saxon minting practices — a direct consequence of the Norwegian court's deep familiarity with English coin production following decades of Scandinavian rule over England. Olav had been present at Stamford Bridge in 1066, the battle that killed his father Harald and effectively ended Norse ambitions in England, yet English die-cutting techniques continued influencing Norwegian output for another generation.
Skaare 19 is among the thinner, lighter issues of Olav's long reign, reflecting a gradual reduction in silver content that accelerated toward the 1080s.
