Produced during the reign of Olav Kyrre, these anonymous pennings dropped the royal name entirely — an unusual choice that numismatists still debate. The most likely explanation is a deliberate effort to circulate coinage beyond Norway's borders without tying it to a specific monarch, facilitating trade across the North Sea and into the Baltic.
