Beschrijving voorzijde Crude effigy of a royal bust with free-flowing hair facing left, rendered in the rough hammered style characteristic of late Viking-age Norwegian coinage. The bust occupies the central field and is enclosed by a circular beaded border at the rim. A circumscribed legend in Latin uncial characters surrounds the effigy between the bust and the beaded ring.

Aanvullende informatie

Produced during the reign of Olav Kyrre, these anonymous pennings dropped the royal name entirely — an unusual choice that numismatists still debate. The most likely explanation is a deliberate effort to circulate coinage beyond Norway's borders without tying it to a specific monarch, facilitating trade across the North Sea and into the Baltic. Olav's reign was otherwise characterized by relative peace and the consolidation of church infrastructure, making his mint output surprisingly substantial for an eleventh-century Scandinavian kingdom.

Skaare's classification separates this type from the broader anonymous series on the basis of die-link evidence.
