Additional information

Ghana's 1958 penny was part of the first coinage issued by the newly independent state following the dissolution of British West Africa's currency union. The Bank of Ghana replaced the West African Currency Board issues that had circulated across the region — coins that bore no reference to any individual territory — with a distinctly Ghanaian series, a direct consequence of independence in March 1957.

The bronze composition mirrors that of the outgoing British West African penny almost exactly, a pragmatic continuity given that the Royal Mint in London struck this series as well.
