| Obverse description | Central device depicting a framed vignette of a hand saw with handle, enclosed within a square decorative border. The circular legend reads T. W. GOURLAY & CO. along the upper arc and CHRISTCHURCH along the lower arc, with the words IMPORTERS OF and KITCHENERS arranged in the central field above and below the vignette respectively. The design is executed in a plain commercial style typical of mid-nineteenth century colonial trade tokens, with a milled border encircling the whole. |

| Reverse description | Central field dominated by the word FURNISHING in bold capital letters, with BUILDERS & arranged above in a curved legend and IRONMONGERY below in a similarly curved inscription. The words ECONOMY HOUSE appear prominently along the upper peripheral arc and HIGH STREET along the lower arc, all separated by a reeded inner border. A stylised saw or tool motif appears in the lower central field, consistent with the firm's trade in ironmongery and builders' supplies. The overall design is plain and functional, characteristic of New Zealand provincial trade tokens of the second half of the nineteenth century. |
