Aigüesbones de Montbui issued cardboard emergency currency during the Spanish Civil War, when the Republican government's monetary system fragmented so severely that individual municipalities were forced to print their own scrip to keep local commerce moving. These consell-issued pieces were never intended to circulate beyond the village boundary, and most were redeemed or destroyed at the war's end — which is precisely why surviving examples in any condition are genuinely scarce.
