The issuing authority 'CONSELL MUNICIPAL' appears in bold capitals at the top, with 'ARGENTERA' centred below, separated by a short rule and a small ornamental asterisk. A serial number field preceded by 'Núm.' occupies the centre, and the denomination 'Val 1 Pta.' is set in large bold letterpress type across the lower portion. The Consell Municipal de l'Argentera issued this emergency local currency during the Spanish Civil War, when the Republican zone suffered an acute shortage of small-denomination coinage. Municipalities across Catalonia — including tiny villages — were authorized under the Generalitat's 1936 emergency decrees to print their own fractional notes and cardboard vouchers to keep local commerce functional. L'Argentera, a small town in the Camp de Tarragona with only a few hundred inhabitants at the time, produced one of the more modest issues in the Turró catalog.
The thick card format is characteristic of these Catalan wartime emissions — essentially printed on whatever stock was available locally. Survival rates vary wildly across the series; issues from smaller municipalities were often never formally withdrawn and simply disintegrated in use.
