Barberà de la Conca is a small municipality in the Conca de Barberà comarca of Tarragona province, and this note is one of hundreds of hyperlocal emergency issues produced during the Spanish Civil War after the collapse of conventional coin circulation in Republican-held territory. The 1936–1939 period saw municipalities, collectives, and unions across Catalonia printing their own fractional currency — most of it in tiny runs, on whatever paper and presses were locally available.
Imprenta Mestres in nearby Montblanc, the comarca's capital, printed several of these municipal issues. The shared printer explains why notes from different villages in the region are often typographically similar despite representing entirely separate issuing authorities.
