During the Spanish Civil War, the collapse of small-denomination coinage in the Republican zone forced hundreds of municipalities across Spain to print their own emergency paper. Cantoria's 1 Peseta note is one of these — a purely local stopgap, issued under authority of the Ayuntamiento to keep petty commerce moving when fractional currency had effectively ceased to exist.
The Gari Monetary catalogue (Mon#442) remains the primary reference for these Spanish municipal emissions, many of which survive in tiny quantities simply because the issuing towns were small and production runs were limited accordingly.
