Ciales is a mountain municipality in Puerto Rico's central cordillera, and this piece belongs to a series issued under the Commonwealth's municipal commemorative program — a project that assigned individual silver peseta-sized coins to each of the island's 78 municipalities. The peseta denomination itself is a deliberate historical nod: Spain's colonial currency remained in circulation in Puerto Rico until the U.S. monetary conversion following the 1898 Treaty of Paris forcibly retired it.
