Puerto Rico has never had issuing authority over its own coinage under U.S. administration, which makes any "Puerto Rico" peseta a privately commissioned or fantasy piece rather than a government issue. The peseta itself was the official currency of Puerto Rico under Spanish rule until 1899, when U.S. occupation replaced it with the dollar at a fixed rate of one dollar per peso. A 2009-dated silver piece denominated in pesetas occupies an ambiguous space — struck well over a century after the currency ceased to exist.
