Municipal emergency notes from the Spanish Civil War period were issued by hundreds of towns and cities acting independently after the collapse of normal banking channels in the Republican zone. Jaén, a provincial capital in Andalusia, held for the Republic throughout the war, and local issues like this filled the vacuum left by hoarded coins — the phenomenon known as "la crisis de la calderilla."
