Massalcoreig is a village in the Segrià comarca of Lleida with a population that barely reached 600 during the 1930s. Like hundreds of Catalan and Aragonese municipalities, its council issued emergency paper scrip during the Spanish Civil War after metallic coin vanished almost entirely from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply consumed by a wartime economy. These local emissions were authorised under Republican decrees that permitted municipalities to fill the gap, and Imprenta Payà in Lleida served several such councils in the region, producing small runs on whatever card stock was available.
The official stamp was the primary guarantee of authenticity — the printing itself offered none.
