| Obverse description | Left-facing bust of George Washington, first President of the United States (1789–1797), occupies the central field. The legend "ISLA DE PUERTO RICO" arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination "UNA PESETA" and the date "2009" appear along the lower periphery. The motto "EN DIOS CREEMOS" and the word "LIBERTAD" are inscribed in the field flanking the effigy, along with the mint mark "PRM". The design closely echoes the style of the United States quarter dollar. |

Vieques, a small island municipality off Puerto Rico's east coast, spent decades as a U.S. Navy bombing range — a use that sparked sustained civil protest and culminated in the Navy's withdrawal in 2003. This piece belongs to a regional collector series issued years after that withdrawal, when Vieques was attempting to reinvent itself as an ecotourism destination while managing the environmental remediation of unexploded ordnance left across its terrain.
