Puerto Rico has no monetary authority and issues no official coinage — this piece originates from the private fantasy token tradition that flourished in the early 2000s, when several Spanish-heritage territories became subjects of medallic "what if" issues marketed to collectors nostalgic for pre-1898 colonial currency. The peseta was Puerto Rico's actual unit of account under Spanish rule until the U.S. takeover following the Spanish-American War forcibly converted the island to dollars at a punishing exchange rate that wiped out local savings.
