The Junta Central Republicana de Cuba y Puerto Rico was not a government — it was a revolutionary body operating in exile, primarily from New York, in support of the Cuban uprising that began with the Grito de Yara in October 1868. These notes were issued as a funding mechanism for the insurrection, not as a functioning circulating currency backed by any treasury or banking institution. The practical reach of such instruments was limited to sympathizers and émigré networks.
Printing in New York placed production well beyond Spanish colonial enforcement. Whether these notes saw meaningful use inside Cuba during the Ten Years' War remains genuinely uncertain.
