The Banco Colombiano was one of several private banks operating under Colombia's 1865 banking legislation, which permitted chartered institutions to issue their own notes — a system that persisted until the government moved to centralize emission in the early twentieth century. American Bank Note Company handled the engraving and printing work, as it did for the majority of Colombian private bank issues during this period, which gives this note its characteristically fine intaglio quality.
The twenty-one-year date range on the series reflects the bank's prolonged authorization to issue, not multiple distinct printings — surviving examples tend not to differ substantively by date.
