The Provincia de Tucumán was one of several Argentine interior provinces still issuing its own paper currency at the turn of the century, a practice the national government had been systematically trying to eliminate since the Banco Nacional's collapse in 1891. That Tucumán was still printing provincial notes in 1900 reflects how slowly Buenos Aires actually enforced monetary consolidation in the northwest.
The Compañía Sud-Americana de Billetes de Banco, a Buenos Aires-based security printer, handled a significant share of provincial and municipal note production during this period — the same firm printed for several other Argentine provinces in the 1890s and early 1900s before the federal government fully absorbed regional currency functions.
