Peru's 1855 peso patterns were struck as the republic debated adopting a decimal monetary system, a reform that wouldn't fully materialize until the escudo and real structure was replaced in the 1860s. Pattern coinage from this transitional period was produced in limited quantities for official review, never reaching circulation. KM#Pn12 is among several competing designs evaluated that year.
