Obverse description The Cuban national coat of arms occupies the centre of the obverse, featuring a shield divided into three sections: the upper portion displays a key between two rocky headlands representing the Gulf of Mexico, the lower left quarter bears horizontal stripes symbolising the sea, and the lower right quarter depicts a royal palm beneath a rising sun. The shield is surmounted by a Phrygian cap on a lance, and flanked by two leafy oak and laurel branches tied at the base. A five-pointed star appears to the left and right of the wreath. The legend REPUBLICA DE CUBA arcs along the upper periphery in raised Latin capitals, and the denomination 1 PESO is inscribed in the lower field.
