Halberstadt notgeld coinage emerged from the acute metal shortages of World War I, when the German imperial government progressively requisitioned copper and other non-ferrous metals for munitions production. Municipal and district authorities across Germany were left to issue their own emergency iron pieces to keep small-denomination commerce functional. The Landkreis — the rural district surrounding the city proper — issued independently of the city itself, which accounts for the distinct cataloguing under Funck 185.2 rather than the better-known urban Halberstadt types.
