Hersfeld issued zinc notgeld coinage during the acute metal shortages of World War I, when Imperial Germany's centralized minting system could no longer supply municipalities with enough small-denomination currency for daily transactions. Cities were authorized to produce their own emergency coinage, and Hersfeld was among hundreds of smaller German towns that struck zinc pieces to fill the gap left by hoarded copper and nickel.
Zinc was the last-resort metal — corrosive, brittle, and poorly suited to coinage — which explains the high rate of surface degradation seen on surviving examples.
