Sudan's 2006 coinage reform accompanied the introduction of the new Sudanese pound, which replaced the dinar at a rate of 100 dinars to one pound — itself a redenomination of a currency that had been badly eroded by years of civil war financing and IMF-pressured austerity. The piastre, one-hundredth of that new pound, was effectively a denomination being reborn after decades of irrelevance.
Aluminium bronze was a practical choice for a country with constrained minting budgets and a need for durability in harsh climatic conditions. The reform coincided with the Comprehensive Peace Agreement of 2005, which ended the Second Sudanese Civil War after twenty-two years.
