The Jersey Bank was a private commercial bank operating on the island in the nineteenth century, one of several local institutions issuing their own notes before the States of Jersey eventually consolidated currency authority. Private bank failures elsewhere in Britain made islanders cautious about paper, and Jersey's notes from this period often show lower circulation wear than their age suggests — not because they were cherished, but because locals frequently preferred coin.
