Heavy cast bronzes of this class — aes grave produced in central Italy during the third century BC — were already becoming obsolete as Rome's monetary system expanded its reach following the Second Punic War. The attribution to an uncertain issuing city is not unusual for this series; scholars have proposed various Umbrian and Samnite centers over the decades without consensus settling anywhere firmly.
At over 75 grams for a quadrans, this piece dates from before the progressive weight reductions that would render the heavy cast series impractical within a generation.
