The absence of the caduceus — present on closely related types — marks this as a distinct emission, not a die slip or workshop variation, and the distinction has been recognized since Haeberlin's foundational 1910 study of aes grave coinage.
At over 62 grams, this quadrans adheres to a weight standard that was already becoming obsolete as Rome's military campaigns drove progressive reductions in the as series throughout the third century.
