Obverse description At center, the Chilean national arms: a quartered shield divided vertically, with the dexter half bearing horizontal lines (azure) and the sinister half bearing vertical lines (gules), charged with a five-pointed star in the center field. Above the shield, a crest of three ostrich feathers. The shield is flanked by two laurel-and-olive branches tied at the base with a ribbon bow. The denomination '1 R' appears in the field to either side of the shield, with the date '1840' and assayer initials 'I·J' positioned below the wreath along the lower periphery. The circular legend 'REPUBLICA DE CHILE' runs along the upper portion of the coin, separated by small dots, within a beaded border.
