Oman joined the United Nations in 1971, the same year Sultan Qaboos bin Said seized power from his father in a palace coup. The country's membership was uncontroversial, but its internal politics were anything but — a Dhofar insurgency backed by South Yemen was still active and would not be fully suppressed until 1976. This commemorative marks the 75th anniversary of the UN's founding, an occasion that prompted dozens of national mints to issue near-identical silver rounds under licensing arrangements with the UN itself.
The Royal Mint of Oman struck this under the authority of the Central Bank, which has issued collector silver sporadically rather than systematically.
