Ras al-Khaimah began issuing coins in 1969 under Saqr bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, years before the UAE federation formally absorbed the emirate's monetary independence in 1973. The issues were produced largely for the collector market — actual circulation in the Trucial States at the time ran on Gulf rupees and, briefly, the Bahraini dinar. This piece was struck at the British Royal Mint.
