Ras al-Khaimah began issuing coins in 1969, two years before the UAE federation formally absorbed it — a period when the emirate's ruler, Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammed al-Qasimi, was actively courting international recognition as a quasi-independent state. Essai pieces from this era were produced almost exclusively for the collector market, with European mints supplying proof-quality strikes to a ruler eager to assert numismatic presence on the world stage.
KM#E1 designation confirms this as a pattern or trial piece, never released for circulation.
