1 Rouble Biathlon

Issued as part of Belarus's early post-Soviet commemorative program, this copper-nickel rouble was struck in the lead-up to the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics. Belarus had only recently established its own national bank and currency infrastructure following independence in 1991, and the mid-1990s commemorative series represented one of the first sustained efforts to assert numismatic identity distinct from Soviet-era coinage.

Biathlon holds particular cultural weight in Belarus — the national team has historically ranked among the world's strongest, a legacy of Soviet-era sports infrastructure that remained intact after the dissolution.
